What behabior of light enables magnifying glasses and Contact Lenses to bend light rays so people see clearly?
Light refracts when passing from one medium to another. Newton discovered how white light had all colors within it when he noticed that passing a beam of white light through a clear prism caused the different frequencies within the white light waves to bend through the prism at different angles. Because different frequencies of light refract (bend) through materials at angles that are dependant upon light wave frequency, the combined colors within the white light entering the prism separate into transmitted bands of colors that vary as a rainbow does.
The principle of being able to control the refraction angle of light though transparent materials enables one to design clear surfaces that can direct light rays to magnify objects, or direct the rays into an eye in such a way as to compensate for imperfect shapes of the lens in some peoples eyes.
